昨日中午，在龜嶼島附近海面，發生一宗意外慘遭滅頂悲劇，死者為一南安籍少年黃成金（十六歲），當時在海面游泳，或因不諳水性，致被波臣召去。迨同伴發覺死者失踪，遍尋不獲，
後得二政府人員之協助，在附近棋樟山打電話，向本坡水上警察求援，，旋一艘快艇趕至，逐在附近島嶼協力打撈，終被撈獲，
但還魂已乏術矣。
但昨日為農曆九月初一日，為本坡華人每年循例往龜嶼參拜，，大伯公之首日,死者昨晨曾告其兄嫂，謂與友人同往參拜，那知一去竟遭不幸。
查死者前為崇正學校學生，近已輟學，父母俱逝，現在小坡大马路其兄*黄雲騰經營之布莊工作。

Tragic Drowning Incident Near Kusu Island – Huang Chengjin (16 years old)
Yesterday afternoon, in the waters near Kusu Island (龜嶼島), a tragic drowning accident occurred. The deceased was a 16-year-old youth from Nan’an (南安籍) Ng Seng Kim (黃成金). At the time, he was swimming in the sea. Possibly due to his lack of swimming skills, he was taken by the waves (波臣召去).
When his companions realised that Ng had gone missing, they searched extensively but could not find him.
With the assistance of two government personnel, a phone call was made from neay St John’s Island (棋樟山) to the Marine Police on the main island requesting help. Soon afterwards, a speedboat arrived, and together they conducted a search around the nearby islands. His body was eventually recovered, but it was too late — he could not be revived.
It was later discovered that the day was the 1st day of the 9th lunar month, a date when Chinese residents in Singapore traditionally visit Kusu Island every year to pray. The deceased had told his elder brother and sister-in-law that morning that he was going with friends to pay respects at the temple. Little did they know that this trip would end in tragedy.
The deceased was previously a student at Chongzheng School (崇正學校) but had recently dropped out. Both his parents had already passed away. He was working at a cloth shop operated by his elder brother Ng Koon Teng (黃坤騰) at North Bridge Road

一块招牌、一间店铺，让新兴泉记60年前在克莱街落脚，一针一线的裁缝辅料，伴随三代人。传统工艺如今与科技交织，为这家老字号绣出新活力。
迁至桥北路的总店，陈列着琳琅满目的丝带、纽扣和针线等商品。明黄色的外墙，宣告这是属于黄家的生意。
1923年出生于中国福建泉州的黄坤腾，是新兴泉记的创始人。战火纷乱的时代，他骑着脚踏车到处做买卖，养家糊口；新加坡独立之年，他凭借对买卖缝纫用品的了解，创业立足。
已故的黄坤腾育有两儿四女，除了远嫁新西兰的二女儿，其他子女从小在店里帮忙，即使现在传到第三代，还能看到他们忙碌工作的身影。
二儿子黄昭宝（74岁）记得，起初本钱不多，非常艰辛。不过，随着中国等地经济开放，专于进出口贸易的新兴泉记逐渐取得竞争优势，在上世纪70至90年代蓬勃发展。“只要你有独特的货源，顾客自然会找你。”

What does 60 years of time carry? It is a person growing from a newborn cry to the age of sixty. It is two hands that once joined in marriage now walking together into old age. It is several generations progressing from starting with nothing to passing on the family legacy. It is a newly established poor country transforming into a metropolis filled with dreams and opportunities.
As Singapore celebrates 60 years of independence in 2025, entering this new year, Lianhe Zaobao focuses on six stories of people and things that share the same age as the nation. Looking back on the past six decades of trials and tribulations, we witness the growth and changes of this small island nation’s people, events, and things, and continue to write the infinite possibilities of the future.
A shop sign and a storefront allowed Sin Hin Chuan Kee to settle on Clyde Street (克莱街) 60 years ago. Tailoring accessories — one stitch, one thread — have accompanied three generations of the family. Traditional craftsmanship now intertwines with technology, embroidering new vitality into this old-established business.
The main store, relocated to North Bridge Road (桥北路), displays a dazzling array of ribbons, buttons, needles, threads, and other goods. The bright yellow exterior walls proudly declare that this is the Huang family’s business.
Ng Koon Teng (黃坤騰), born in 1923 in Quanzhou, Fujian, China, was the founder of Xin Xing Quan Ji. In an era of war and chaos, he rode a bicycle around making trades to support his family. In the year Singapore gained independence, leveraging his knowledge of the sewing supplies trade, he established his own business and gained a foothold.
The late Ng Koon Teng had two sons and four daughters. Except for the second daughter who married and moved to New Zealand, all his children helped out in the shop from a young age. Even now, into the third generation, one can still see them busily working.
Second son Ng Cheow Poh (黃昭寶, 74 years old) remembers that in the beginning, capital was limited and life was extremely difficult. However, as China and other places opened up economically, Xin Xing Quan Ji, which specialised in import-export trade, gradually gained a competitive edge and flourished in the 1970s to 1990s. “As long as you have unique sources of goods, customers will naturally come to you.”

Facing new trends such as the rise of online shopping and changing lifestyles, many peers have exited the market. Ng Cheow Poh describes Sin Hin Chuan Kee as the last “great hero” — only by continuously exploring new opportunities can it survive.
