The progenitor of Chaodong Village, Meiyun Subdistrict, Rongcheng, Cheang Rongshen, was learned and talented, skilled in scholarship, and also proficient in geography. In the late Yuan Dynasty, he accompanied Koh Wanyi, a native of Putian, Fujian, to the Chao region. Koh Wanyi established his settlement in Xiaqiao Village, and Cheang Rongshen at that time selected a site and built a "Jiacheng" (a tomb) for the master Koh Wanyi. Koh Wanyi offered him a monetary gift as compensation, but Cheang Rongshen refused to accept it.

As Cheang was a scholar and teacher, he taught Koh Wanyi's three sons to read and write at the Koh family home. When Cheang Rongshen grew old and had no sons, the Koh family designated their youngest son, Koh Yutan, as Cheang Rongshen's heir to carry on the Cheang surname. On his deathbed, Cheang Rongshen wrote a will, instructing his descendants to follow the teaching of "born Cheang, died Koh." This was both to express gratitude for Koh Wanyi's righteousness and to symbolize the idea of "fallen leaves returning to their roots" (referring to the adopted son returning to his original Koh lineage in death).

From then on, Cheang Rongshen's descendants strictly adhered to this ancestral instruction, passing it down through generations. The integrity of the Cheang family and the righteousness of the Koh family thus became a celebrated story among the surnames of the Chaoshan region.
