Mr. Lee Kia Joo (alias Lee Kee Sin) passed away peacefully at his residence, 218 Moulmein Road, on Friday night, the 26th of August, 1938, at the age of 82. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Madam Kwek Hwee Teck; one son, Mr Lee Siow Mong, of the Straits Settlements Civil Service; and three daughters.

新、马知名学者和民俗专家李绍茂昨天因患癌症病逝于爱士阁医院中,享年75岁。

李绍茂自五十年代起担任中国学会主席。这个学会是一个研究中国艺术文化的组织。

丧家家属说,李绍茂“已经病了好几个月”。

李氏曾在今年三月间接受肠癌切除手术。李绍茂于1915年在新加坡出生,七岁时被父亲送回中国受教育。

五年后,他回返新加坡入读英校,但继续随补习教师学中文,习书法、篆刻与绘画。

李绍茂于1937年在莱佛士学院获得科学证书,进入海峡殖民地的民事服务部工作。

他在战后负笈牛津奥利尔学院修读公共行政学,学成后在新加坡担任过教育部提学司、教育部文化部与首席部长常任秘书等多个职位。

1965年退休之前,他是公用事业局总经理。

他随后获马来西亚政府委任为公积金局总经理,在任15年,至1980年才第二度退休。

精通中、英、巫三种语文,李绍茂曾在马来亚大学中文系执教大约十年,并有四本著作。

他育有三子二女,其中一子是国大英文系讲师。

他的灵柩将于下星期一从住家引发至碧耶山火葬场火化。

Renowned scholar and folklore expert of Singapore and Malaysia, Lee Siow Mong, passed away yesterday at Alexandra Hospital due to cancer, at the age of 75.

Since the 1950s, Lee Siow Mong had served as chairman of the China Society, an organization dedicated to the study of Chinese arts and culture. According to the bereaved family, Lee Siow Mong had been ill for several months.”

In March this year, Mr. Lee underwent surgery to remove bowel cancer. Born in Singapore in 1915, he was sent back to China by his father at the age of seven for schooling.

Five years later, he returned to Singapore to attend an English-medium school but continued to study Chinese with a tutor and practiced calligraphy, seal carving, and painting. In 1937, Lee Siow Mong obtained a science certificate from Raffles College and then joined the Civil Service Department of the Straits Settlements.

After the war, he studied public administration at Oriel College, Oxford. Upon graduation, he held various positions in Singapore, including Director of Education (Inspectorate), posts in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, and Permanent Secretary to the Chief Minister.

Before his retirement in 1965, he was the general manager of the Public Utilities Board. He was later appointed by the Malaysian government as General Manager of the Employees Provident Fund, a position he held for 15 years, retiring for the second time in 1980.

Proficient in Chinese, English, and Malay, Lee Siow Mong also taught for about ten years in the Chinese Department of the University of Malaya and authored four books.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters; one son is a lecturer in the Department of English at the National University.

His remains will be taken from his residence to the Mt. Vernon Crematorium for cremation next Monday.
