遗启者：本国旃檀林住持明真法师
不幸于公元1996年2月13日农历乙亥年十二月廿五日上午5时15分安详圆寂。
法师原籍中国河北省邱郸县人氏，俗姓薛，出生于癸亥年农历七月十五日辰时。
法师与佛有缘，自幼发心投入佛门，礼山西圣水寺僧，归依三宝。十二岁时，发心出家，依本县性觉寺通神大师落发为沙弥僧，法名承初，字明真。廿二岁，投北京弘慈广济寺融缘和尚座下受具足戒，成大比丘僧格，此后参学南方，亲近知识，在云水生涯中，曾住过上海圆明讲堂、香港东普陀寺。盛年时前来南洋，住檗城佛学院。中年时因缘成就转来星洲，初住昆卢寺，曾任职圆寺。后因旃檀林住持竹隐法师圆寂，由本道长老与檗城龙辉法师推荐为旃檀林住持，朝夕拜经礼忏，曾无间断。直至六年前脑血管阻塞，行动不便，但念佛如故，直至现在。曾经何荣梁介绍任灵山寺住持。也曾为马来西亚三宝宫住持。法师生平，崇敬佛祖，严守僧行，淡薄名利。
1965年间，法师发愿重建旃檀林寺，使道场庄严，接引众生，法事兴隆，已满宿愿。兹以住世缘毕，念佛声中舍报生西。法师戒年七十三岁，僧腊六十一，戒腊五十一。
法师遗体，已于本月13日夏历腊月廿五日下午2时入殓，特恭请佛总主席隆根长老主持说法封棺。订于2月17日，农历十二月廿九日（星期六）下午2时举殓，恭邀普济寺住持妙灯长老主持说法起棺，引发至光明山火葬场，恭请普觉禅寺都监广余长老主持荼毗。

OBITUARY NOTICE
Announcement of the passing of Venerable Ming Zhen, Abbot of Tsan Tan Lim Temple
Passed away peacefully on February 13, 1996 (25th day of the 12th lunar month, Year of Yi Hai) at 5:15 AM.
The Venerable was originally from Qiudan County, Hebei Province, China, with the lay surname Xue, born on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month in the Year of Gui Hai during the Chen hour.
The Venerable had a karmic affinity with Buddhism from an early age, joining the Buddhist order as a child at Shengshui Temple in Shanxi, taking refuge in the Three Jewels. At age 12, he left home to become a novice monk under Master Tongsheng at Xingjue Temple in his home county, receiving the Dharma name Cheng Chu, with the courtesy name Ming Zhen. At age 22, he received full ordination under the tutelage of Master Rong Yuan at Hongci Guangji Temple in Beijing, becoming a fully ordained monk. He then studied in southern China, seeking knowledge and staying at various temples including Shanghai Yuanming Lecture Hall and Hong Kong's East Putuo Temple. In his prime years, he came to Southeast Asia and resided at Biecheng Buddhist Academy. In middle age, he moved to Singapore, initially staying at Kunlu Temple and serving at Yuan Temple. After the passing of Abbot Zhuyin of Tsan Tan Lim Temple, he was recommended by senior monks to become the abbot of Tsan Tan Lim Temple, where he devoted himself to daily sutra recitation and repentance ceremonies without interruption. Six years ago, he suffered from cerebral vascular blockage, limiting his mobility, but continued his Buddha-name recitation until present. He also served as abbot of Lingshan Temple through He Rongliang's introduction, and as abbot of the Three Jewels Palace in Malaysia. Throughout his life, he revered the Buddha, strictly observed monastic discipline, and remained indifferent to fame and fortune.
In 1965, the Venerable vowed to rebuild Tsan Tan Lim Temple, creating a dignified practice center that attracted many followers and flourished in Dharma activities, thus fulfilling his longtime wish. Having completed his karmic conditions in this world, he departed for the Western Pure Land amid the sound of Buddha-name recitation. The Venerable was 73 years old in precept age, with 61 years as a monk and 51 years since full ordination.
The deceased's body was placed in the coffin on the 13th of this month at 2 PM, with the Singapore Buddhist Federation Chairman, Elder Longgen, presiding over the Dharma service and sealing of the coffin. The funeral service will be held on February 17th (29th day of the 12th lunar month, Saturday) at 2 PM, with Elder Miaodeng of Puji Temple presiding over the lifting of the coffin ceremony. The procession will proceed to Mount Guangming Crematorium, with Elder Guangyu of Pujue Chan Temple presiding over the cremation.
