Summary: 夏正蓮 (Hah Soon Lian), titled 老太姑, died on 25 March 1967 at the age of 89 and was buried at Bukit Brown on 27 March 1967. The burial register describes her as a Khek (Hakka). Her tomb is headed 東龍山 and 善德堂, the Sian Teck Tng, the women's vegetarian hall on Cuppage Road, and is dated 丁未年二月十五, which is 25 March 1967. 老太姑 is 引恩, the second of the four ranks open to women in the Xiantian Dao 先天道. The stone reads 女孫 曾賽珠 Chan Sai Choo and 曾賽金 Chan Sai Kim 仝立, so her granddaughters set it up jointly. It lies in Block 3B, an area otherwise filled in the 1930s, because after 1946 only plots reserved earlier were still available. A tablet in the Sian Teck Tng reads 儒門皈依夏正蓮之長生蓮座. Two other young women of the Eastern Dragon Mountain halls, buried in 1930 and 1932, also carry the surname 夏 (Hah), and the author suspects a religious surname.

Tomb Inscription 墓碑銘文

碑文Transcription / Meaning
丁未年二月十五"The 15th day of the second month of the 丁未 year." The stone is dated by the cycle year alone, with no era name. Converted, it is 25 March 1967, the date of death in the burial register.
夏正蓮老太姑墓"Tomb of the 老太姑 Xia Zhenglian." The register spells her name Hah Soon Lian.
東龍山"Eastern Dragon Mountain", the name of the Xiantian division to which the Sian Teck Tng belongs. It also heads the 姑太 stone of Mrs Seah Whye Liang.
善德堂"Sian Teck Tng", the women's hall on Cuppage Road, named here as the hall of the deceased.
女孫 曾賽珠 Chan Sai Choo, 曾賽金 Chan Sai Kim"Granddaughters Zeng Saizhu (Chan Sai Choo) and Zeng Saijin (Chan Sai Kim)." Both given names begin with 賽, so they share a generation or sibling character. Their surname 曾 differs from hers.
仝立"Set up jointly." The stone was set up by the two granddaughters together.

Tablet in the Sian Teck Tng:

碑文Transcription / Meaning
儒門皈依夏正蓮之長生蓮座"Of the Confucian gate, taken refuge: the longevity lotus seat of Xia Zhenglian." Show Ying Ruo reports that the tablets of the Sian Teck Tng are headed 儒門修道 or 儒門皈依. 長生 ("long life") marks a tablet made for a person while living, so this one was probably made before her death. Its date is not recorded.

Notes on the inscriptions:

  • Dated by the cycle year. 丁未 recurs every 60 years, and the age of 89 in the register fixes the year as 1967, so the stone gives her death as 25 March 1967 and not 1907.
  • Granddaughters of a celibate rank. The Xiantian women's ranks practised celibacy, so granddaughters would normally descend through an adopted daughter (養女). Show Ying Ruo gives such cases, for example the Tian Chun Tang abbess 吳善賢, adopted daughter of the Kor Tai 張德慧. The mother of Chan Sai Choo and Chan Sai Kim is not yet identified, and it is not known whether any of them was adopted.
  • Two kinds of title. The tomb gives her rank, 老太姑. The tablet gives the sect formula, 儒門皈依, with no rank. The same two formulas, 儒門修道 and 儒門皈依, appear on the stones of Chong Bin Kong 張明光 and Mrs Seah Whye Liang.

A Late Burial in a Reserved Plot 1967年預留墓穴

  • Plots closed after 1946. Bukit Brown plots were no longer available to the public after 1946, and only plots reserved earlier could still be used.
  • An area filled in the 1930s. Her tomb is in Block 3B, where the related tombs on this blog date from 1929 and 1930: Chong Bin Kong (plot 371, reserved) and Mrs Seah Whye Liang (plots 396/421, reserved). Her plot was therefore reserved well before her death.
  • A possible hall cluster. All three tombs are Eastern Dragon Mountain tombs in the same block. Her plot 202 can be compared with 371, 396 and 421 to see whether the hall tombs sit close together.

The Surname 夏 (Hah) in the Vegetarian Halls 齋堂中的夏姓

While recording this tomb, the author noticed that women of the vegetarian halls carry the surname 夏 (Hah). The label Name - Har 夏 on this blog now holds three tombs. The working hypothesis is that 夏 is a religious surname that marks standing in the halls, in the way that Buddhist monks take a shared religious surname on ordination.

The dates of the two younger tombs were converted from the lunar dates on the stones and agree with the Gregorian dates written beside them.

  • Not one family. The three women have different given names and romanisations, died at 89, 26 and 23, and were buried 35 years apart. The two younger women were set up by fellow adherents of the hall and not by relatives. A family surname would not normally explain this. A surname given within the hall would.
  • All three are Eastern Dragon Mountain. Each stone is headed 東龍山, and the stones of 夏誌德姑 and 夏禧安 both name the 善德堂 (Sian Teck Tng), as does the stone of 夏正蓮. The two younger stones and the tablet of 夏正蓮 all carry the formula 儒門皈依.
  • Three plots within Block 3. Plot 424 in Block 3B is numerically close to plot 421 of Mrs Seah Whye Liang and near 396 and 371, so a cluster of hall tombs is plausible there, to be checked on the ground. Plot 630 is in Block 3A and plot 202 in Block 3B.
  • What the sources show. Show Ying Ruo names other Kor Tai with ordinary surnames, among them 蘇玉蘭, 張德慧, 吳善賢, 胡玉蓮 and 劉嫦娥. The Chek Sian Teng abbess 宋悟通姑太 in the Song Guat Neo 宋月娘 record has a real surname followed by a religious given name. None of the sources consulted so far explains a 夏 surname, so the idea remains a hypothesis.
  • What would test it. The birth names and dialect groups of the three women, any other 夏 tombs, and the surnames of their parents or family if recorded. If the families were of other surnames, 夏 was acquired in the hall.
  • A related puzzle. The Seah Whye Liang family post records a different surname problem: Mrs Seah's 姑太 stone names her Tan 陳南英 while the family stones read Goh 吳. A religious or adopted surname is one possible reading, and it remains unproven.

The Rank of 老太姑 and the Sian Teck Tng 善德堂

  • The four ranks. Show Ying Ruo lists four ranks for women in the Xiantian Dao: 保恩 姑太, 引恩 老太姑, 證恩 大姑 and 天恩 姑娘. 老太姑 therefore sits one step below 姑太, the highest rank open to women, as on the stone of Mrs Seah Whye Liang.
  • The hall. The Sian Teck Tng on Cuppage Road is one of the women's halls (坤堂) linked to the Tong Sian Tng men's hall on Devonshire Road, whose founder was 馬純清 (Beh Soon Ching). Noreen Chan describes it in The Peranakan (2002) as a home for widows and older unmarried women, built on land given by a Teochew family next door, with donors recorded on two stone tablets at the entrance.
  • Dates. Show Ying Ruo dates the hall to 1883 from its stele, which was erected in 1903, while Roots.sg gives 1904.
  • Residents. Show Ying Ruo reports, following Topley, that most residents were second-generation Hakka women born in Malaya or Indonesia, together with Nyonyas, and that abbesses were often Peranakans. The register describes 夏正蓮 as a Khek, which agrees with this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who was 夏正蓮 (Hah Soon Lian), the 老太姑 of the Sian Teck Tng?
夏正蓮 (Hah Soon Lian) was an 89-year-old Hakka (Khek) woman of the Xiantian Dao 先天道 vegetarian halls who died on 25 March 1967 and was buried at Bukit Brown Cemetery on 27 March 1967. Her tomb is titled 老太姑, the second of four ranks open to women, and is headed 東龍山 (Eastern Dragon Mountain) and 善德堂 (Sian Teck Tng). Her granddaughters 曾賽珠 (Chan Sai Choo) and 曾賽金 (Chan Sai Kim) set it up.

When did 夏正蓮 die, and when was she buried?
The burial register gives her death as 25 March 1967 and her interment as 27 March 1967, at the age of 89. The tomb is dated 丁未年二月十五, the 15th day of the second month of the 丁未 year, which converts to 25 March 1967 and agrees with the register.

Why was she buried at Bukit Brown in 1967?
Bukit Brown plots were no longer available to the public after 1946, and only plots reserved earlier could still be used. Her tomb lies in Block 3B, an area otherwise filled in the 1930s, so the plot was most likely reserved decades before she died.

What is the 老太姑 rank?
老太姑 is 引恩, the second of four ranks for women in the Xiantian Dao. Above it is 姑太 (保恩), the highest rank, and below it are 大姑 (證恩) and 姑娘 (天恩), according to Show Ying Ruo.

Is 夏 (Hah) a religious surname in the vegetarian halls?
This is not yet proven, but the evidence points that way. Three tombs on this blog carry the surname 夏: Hah Soon Lian (89, d. 1967), Ha Jon Kee (26, d. 1932) and Har Choak Chin (23, d. 1930). They died decades apart, the two younger women were set up by fellow adherents of the Eastern Dragon Mountain halls rather than by family, and all use the formula 儒門皈依. The author suspects 夏 is a religious surname given within the halls, like the shared surnames of Buddhist monks. None of the sources consulted explains it.

Who set up her tomb?
The stone reads 女孫 曾賽珠 and 曾賽金 仝立, meaning her granddaughters Chan Sai Choo and Chan Sai Kim set it up jointly, under the heading of the Sian Teck Tng. Their surname 曾 differs from hers. The mother of the two granddaughters is not yet identified, and it is not yet known whether any of them was adopted.

What does the tablet in the Sian Teck Tng say?
The tablet reads 儒門皈依夏正蓮之長生蓮座, "of the Confucian gate, taken refuge: the longevity lotus seat of Xia Zhenglian". 長生 normally marks a tablet made for a living person, so the tablet was probably made before her death, though its date is not recorded.
