Chong Pun Girls' School in Singapore — formerly a private school for girls' education. Since Principal Peng Mingnu (彭夢明女士) took charge, the school was thereafter joined by Zhu Nüshi (朱女士), Wang Nüshi (王女士), and others. The school's content, format, and approach were all reformed and improved anew. Recently, however, the school's teaching staff, through persistent and patient guidance...
...student numbers have grown from 60 to as many as 100. But the classrooms are too cramped — those who come to study find it overcrowded, and the space is only a few li away. Local residents, in just one year, have squeezed in — there are 3 to 4 teachers sharing one school building, seated together in an extremely narrow space. Not only is teaching difficult, but moreover, the cramped quarters are detrimental to students' physical development.
We therefore ask the school's General Manager, together with the school's board of directors, to consider expanding the school building. The General Manager and board members, being deeply passionate about girls' education, are urged to act — if permitted, please do so as requested.

She has exerted every effort to reorganize and renovate it, leaving no stone unturned in school management. As a result, the number of students has grown daily, and facilities have become increasingly complete. The school has been established for more than ten years, located on Beach Road (美芝律). It currently has six classrooms and 130 students. The school had strongly advocated for the abolition of the Lunar Calendar. On this day, the school — following government directives — continued operations as normal on Lunar New Year's Day, with no holiday. However, students still informally stayed away, effectively making it a holiday. Today, although the school officially maintained normal classes, breaking past records of student attendance on Lunar New Year...the reporter visited the school yesterday morning to meet with the principal...
Principal Fang Wenjun (方文鈞), who stated that, regarding female students and Lunar New Year, she viewed the day as sacred. However, she believed that the pursuit of education should take precedence over traditional family customs and festivities. She addressed the higher-level students with words suited to the spirit of the times, encouraging them to attend school, while for the lower-level students she sought to gently coax their attendance. Despite this, most students took leave yesterday, with only a small number coming to school.

The Siao Po Besi Lane Chong Cheng School was founded by local gentry, merchants, and community-minded individuals. Its finances, besides student fees and government subsidies, are supplemented by funds from the Shun Tian Gong (also known as Lu Ban Tan Da Bo Gong Temple), making its finances relatively sufficient.
School Establishment & Management):
The school was founded six years before the Republic of China era. It currently has 218 students, with the lowest monthly fee at $50 and highest at $13 (likely reversed in original). Monthly expenditure is approximately $657; the government contributes about $300/month and tuition income about $200/month, with the shortfall covered by the Shun Tian Gong temple funds — though the economic depression has made finances tight.
School Premises
The school premises were allocated by the local government, but an annual land tax of $242 must be paid to the government. The main school building is an old-style Western house (i.e., a raised stilted house / cao jiao cuo), with 7 classrooms. The branch school (located a few dozen steps away Beach Road) has 2 classrooms, but the branch school building is an ordinary shophouse. Therefore, the facilities are not entirely adequate.

Chong Pun Girl School
Introduction:
The Siao Po Beach Road Chong Pun Girls’ School was originally the girls’ section of Chong Cheng School, but later became independent. However, its educational administration and finances remain closely linked to Chong Cheng School. Its monthly deficits are likewise covered by funds from the Shun Tian Gong temple. Current student enrollment is over one hundred.
Finances:
The school has 8 teaching staff, with salaries ranging from $45 to $80 per month. Monthly operating expenses are approximately $450. Income from school fees is about $180, with a government subsidy of several tens of dollars per month. The shortfall is fully covered by Shun Tian Gong temple funds, so the school does not face financial difficulty.
Facilities & Administration:
The school occupies a rented shophouse at $60/month, with 4 classrooms. As it was originally a residential building, lighting and ventilation are not ideal. Besides classrooms, there is an office and display room, but no sports ground — students must use Chong Cheng School’s grounds for physical education.
The school employs an inquiry-based teaching method and runs a full primary school curriculum with good results. Plans exist to jointly construct a new school building with Chong Cheng School at a combined cost of $100,000 ($50,000 from each), but this has been difficult to proceed with during the current economic depression.

“Several Pre-War Chinese-Medium Schools in Singapore”

There was also a girls’ school closely connected to Nanyang Girls’ School, called Chong Pun Girls’ School. My wife, Sun Jinxiu, once worked there as a teacher of music and art, and also served as General Affairs Director. The school was founded in 1916, originally under the name Yude Girls’ School (育德女子學校), and was renamed Chong Pun in 1917. It shared the same board of directors as the boys’ school Chong Cheng School, and the two schools were located on the same premises, separated by the Tiger Balm Hall, which had been built by the Hu family. Among the Chinese-medium schools of that era, the buildings of these two schools were considered quite grand and impressive.
Nanyang Girls’ School had two principals, Pang Mengmin (彭夢民) and Fang Wenjun (方文鈞), both of whom had previously served as principals of Chong Pun. When the Pacific War broke out, the principal of the school was Miss Pang. She advised Jinxiu not to leave Singapore, but since I had decided to return to China, Jinxiu could not stay on either.
Quite a number of the school’s teachers returned to China, among them Chen Minru, Li Zhifen, Wu Zhongxiu, and Tang Renru. The first two frequently met with us in Shanghai. I do not know where Miss Wu Zhongxiu is now. Miss Tang Renru was the physical education teacher — very lively and energetic. After returning to China, I met her once in Kunming, and after the founding of New China she also visited our home. She mentioned that she would be following her husband to Guangzhou to establish a new institution of higher learning, but after that we lost touch.
There was also another teacher whom everyone called “Little Yang” (小揚) at the time — she was the wife of Mr. Shi Yinzuo, the then-current manager of Zhonghua Book Company.
Chong Pun Girls’ School was, in the 1930s, considered on a par with schools such as Zhonghua, Chong Hock, and Nanyang, but as for what happened after the war, I am not very clear.
