Tan Tian Quee was the sixth son of Tan xxx. Tan Thuan Kok's grandfather Tan Tian Chia was the fifth son of Tan xxx.

The first Singaporean selected to join the British Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) Training School and fly in World War II missions with the R.A.F. in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy. In Normandy he was shot down and imprisoned, but escaped. He returned to Singapore a war hero, was involved in setting up the Malayan Auxiliary Air Force (MAAF), and was appointed Wing Commander. He is also referred to as Flight Lieutenant K. H. Tan.

From the Tan Thuan Kok interview on his father Tan Kay Hai (available in the Oral History Interviews on the National Archives of Singapore website), we learned that his grand-uncle is Tan Tian Quee, who was a tiger hunter.
