髮妻 (fà qī) Literally translated means "Hair Wife," w
Why she is called the "Hair Wife":
1. Hair tied up = Adulthood
In ancient China, kids wore their hair down. But when they reached adulthood (around 15 for girls, 20 for guys), they had a ceremony where they tied their hair up into a bun. This was the physical sign that said, "I am now an adult and ready for marriage."
2. Tying hair together = First Marriage
Because people usually got married right after they came of age, the wedding ritual involved the couple literally tying their hair together (or cutting a lock of hair and tying it in a knot). It was the ultimate symbol of two young adults becoming one family.
3. You only do it ONCE
Here is the catch: you only "come of age" and do this specific hair-tying ritual once in your life. Therefore, the woman you marry during this very first, once-in-a-lifetime hair ritual is your "Hair Wife."
4. Why not the second wife or concubines?
Second Wife: If your first wife passed away and you remarried, you were already an adult with your hair tied up. You didn't do the "coming of age" hair ritual again. So, a second wife didn't get the "Hair Wife" title.
Concubines are not called hair wives because they were not the principal, legally binding wife.
髮妻 is the husband’s way of officially declaring to the ancestors and the community: "This is my original, first, and legally binding principal wife." It permanently secures her top spot in the family hierarchy for eternity, distinguishing her from any second wives or concubines if the husband subsequenty marries again
