Goh Eng Kian (吳永堅) died on 29 August 1946 at the age of twenty, and was buried the same day in Block 4B, Plot 169, Bukit Brown Cemetery. He is believed to have been born around 1926. His family traced their ancestry to 海澄 (Hǎichéng), a county in Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian.

Goh Eng Kian died young and unmarried, leaving no direct male heir to observe the ancestral rites or tend his tomb. In accordance with a practice common among Hokkien and other Chinese communities, a son was arranged to be adopted posthumously into his line — Goh Kee Hock (祈福), who is named on the tomb as 继男 (adopted son). It was Goh Kee Hock who erected the tomb inscription.

The posthumous adoption of a son (過繼, guòjì) was a recognised custom in which a young male — typically a nephew or another relative's son — would be formally transferred into the line of a man who had died without issue. This ensured that the deceased would not become a gū hún (孤魂), an unvenerated solitary spirit with no one to perform offerings or maintain his burial place. The practice reflects the deep importance placed on filial continuity in Chinese religious and family life.

Is it possible that this elder brother was Goh Eng Seng who transferred his son Kee Hock (later Dr Goh Kee Hock) to be Goh Eng Kian adopted son ?
