Important Information on Exhumation and Cremation by NEA
Exhumation
1. All graves will be exhumed individually by a contractor engaged and supervised by NEA.
2. The claimant and relatives who wish to witness the exhumation may do so on the scheduled date of exhumation.
3. The exhumed remains will be cremated at Choa Chu Kang Crematorium on the same day.
Options after cremation
4. The claimant may opt for the cremated remains to be:
(a) stored in government columbaria, subject to availability. NEA will allocate a standard niche. Claimants can opt to choose the location of the niche within their selected government columbarium upon fee payment of $280 per niche location.
(b) scattered at an inland ash scattering facility or at sea by NEA's appointed contractor.
5. NEA will bear the costs of exhumation, cremation, allocated standard niche, standard urn and standard niche plaque with inscription of deceased's name and date of death; or inland or sea ash scattering of cremated remains.
Private Arrangements
Claimants who wish to make private arrangements to engage their own contractor to exhume the graves may do so at their own expenses. Claimants are required to indicate their plans to engage an exhumation contractor and for managing the exhumation process in the online Claim Registration Form. The appointed contractor will have to apply for an exhumation permit from NEA by 31 May 2025, with the physical exhumation carried out by 31 July 2025.
Next-of-kin are encouraged to submit the online Claim Registration Form early.
Once the claim is registered, NEA will schedule and notify the claimant on the date of exhumation subsequently.
(All graves will be exhumed and the remains cremated. Unclaimed ashes will be kept for three years before being scattered at sea.)
