龍挺旗皷天門開， 虎拒艮宮地戶閉。 排衙之砂真有情， 癸向艮流富貴龍。 The Dragon rises — flags beat, drums sound, and the Heavenly Gate swings open; The Tiger retreats — the Earth Gate of the Gen palace closes fast. The surrounding mounds array themselves in true and caring formation; Facing Gui, flowing to Gen — this is a Dragon of wealth and noble honour. This is a classical fengshui site-assessment couplet inscribed on the tomb of Chua Eng Cheong (1887).
It describes the ideal landform conditions surrounding the burial site using the language of the Four Emblems and the Eight Trigrams. The Dragon (龍) rising on the left flank and the Tiger (虎) retreating on the right correspond to the auspicious left-green-dragon / right-white-tiger formation in Chinese geomancy. The Gen trigram (艮, northeast) governs the mountain gate; the Gui direction (癸, north-northeast) indicates the sitting orientation of the tomb. Together the couplet asserts that the site's natural topography — hills, water courses, and directional alignments — conforms perfectly to the conditions that generate wealth and rank for descendants.
