Poh Sin Choon’s Memoir Looks Back on a Lifetime Journey
Lianhe Zaobao, 4 October 2021, 05:00
At the age of 97 this year, Poh Sin Choon, founder of Poh Tiong Choon Storage & Transport Group, has published his memoir A Long Journey Through Life (《漫漫人生路》). Written in plain and sincere language, the book reflects on nearly a century of life, looking back at its joys and setbacks, successes and pains.
Poh Sin Choon’s parents migrated from Anxi, Fujian to Singapore in the early 20th century, thereby extending this branch of the Poh family to Singapore and allowing it to flourish on this small island nation.
A Long Journey Through Life adopts a straightforward, chronological narrative style, divided into 21 chapters that combine generational timelines with thematic focus. It begins with the historical origins of the Poh surname, then centers on the ancestors’ journey south, their settling and taking root in Singapore. The pioneer Poh Bo Quan (傅伯偆) and his wife shouldered the burden of supporting a household of ten, beginning their struggle in Singapore. As the eldest son, Poh Sin Choon was born in 1924.
In the memoir, Poh Sin Choon devotes considerable space to recounting in detail the enterprise he founded single-handedly — Poh Tiong Choon Logistics Ltd (PTCL) — and includes dedicated chapters on his parents and his wife.
The sections about the business occupy one-third of the book. They clearly depict the hardships of entrepreneurship, fully embodying the Poh family’s “its sharpness breaks gold” (其利断金) spirit of brotherly unity and mutual support, and from one angle sketch some fragments of the development of Singapore’s transportation industry before and after independence.
A Long Journey Through Life also recounts three life-threatening incidents Poh Sin Choon experienced: being aimed at with a gun by Japanese soldiers during the Japanese Occupation, a ship sinking at sea, and accidentally ingesting gasoline which caused lung damage. Fortunately, good fortune prevailed and danger turned into safety each time. The book also recalls how he continued his parents’ affection for their hometown, actively participating in charity work and giving back to society after achieving success in his career, as well as his personal love for culture. The book is not for public sale; those interested may request a copy by sending an SMS to 96672552.
