Lee Choon Teat, also known by his courtesy name De Yin, was from Tong'an, Fujian Province. His father Lee Yam was a farmer, and his mother was from the Cai family. He married Madam Wang and had five sons and one daughter: Ching Lang, Seng Kim, Seng Hong, Seng Kee, Seng Huat, and his daughter Ying. His eldest son Ching Lang inherited the Kim Lee business and had a son named Swee Kuan who managed the store operations.

Lee grew up in poverty and only received 1-2 years of formal education before coming to Singapore (石叻). He initially worked as a clerk at Ban Kep Guan company before being promoted to manager. Three years later, he joined Kim Lee as a commission agent. When his son Ching Lang was capable enough to handle operations, he handed over full authority to him and accepted a position as general manager at Khoo Kok Wah's  Chop Aik Seng rice trading company, where he worked for over 10 years.

Due to age and overwork, he took leave to return to China hoping to improve his health through travel. He visited various famous sites in Fuzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai. Shortly after returning to Singapore, he fell ill and passed away.

Lee was known for his kindness and charitable nature. After becoming wealthy, he generously helped his less fortunate friends from his youth. His donations to education and charitable organizations in Singapore were numerous, including:

Ai Tong School

Dao Nan School

Nanyang Schools (several thousand dollars each)

Tong'an Nanyang School (2,000 dollars)

Tong'an Hospital (1,000 dollars)

He was also an early member of the Tongmenghui (revolutionary alliance) along with Lau Ang Siak. During the 1911 Revolution, he made substantial donations to support the revolutionary army, demonstrating his revolutionary ideals which exceeded those of ordinary people. His generous contributions to the revolution showed his true character.

Lee Choon Teat was a key member of Goh Loo Club as well. In the PLAN OF BUILDING AT CLUB STREET (70-1 CLUB STREET) covering 1921 from the National Archives, he was listed as the owner of the Goh Loo Club Proposed Premise at Club Street.
