One Hundred Years' History of the Chinese in Singapore
by Song Ong Siang

His first wife, whom he married in December 1896 at the Presbyterian Church in Orchard road,
was the elder daughter of Mr Wong Nai Siong, of Foo-chow. She was a refined, enlightened and well
educated gentlewoman. The experiences which she had gained through her visit to England
andd America, prior to her marriage, enabled her to take a
sympathetic and active interest in all the reform movements of this period, in which
her husband played a part

南洋名人集傳 / Nanyang ming ren ji zhuan

by林博爱 [and others] / Lin bo'ai
Here is the English translation of the text about Dr. Lim Boon Keng (林文慶):

Dr. Lim Boon Keng, style name Meng Qin, was from Haizheng, Haicang, Fujian province. His father was Mr. Tian Yao, who was born on the Penang Island of the Malay Peninsula. His mother was Mrs. Su. He had four siblings, and Dr. Lim Boon Keng was the third child.

Mr. Tian Yao later moved to Singapore, so Dr. Lim Boon Keng was born there. Tracing back his ancestry, his family had been in business in the South Seas for generations, and by the time of Dr. Lim, the family's prominence and prestige had grown tremendously. People said that Dr. Lim's exceptional virtues and accomplishments were the result of the accumulated merits of his ancestors.

From a young age, Dr. Lim Boon Keng's comportment was different from ordinary children. He first studied English at Raffles Institution, and after graduation, the British government recognized his potential and sent him to England, where he entered the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. He completed his studies there in four years, but was still eager to further his education, so he went on to the University of Cambridge. Although originally appointed as an assistant lecturer there, he soon returned to Singapore to practice medicine.

Dr. Lim Boon Keng's medical expertise and his ability to save lives were renowned not only among the overseas Chinese, but also widely known in his home country. In Singapore, besides his medical achievements, he also actively promoted reconciliation between the Chinese and the British, and safeguarded public order in society. As a result, his name was included in the leadership of almost all the major Chinese community organizations.

The British government highly valued Dr. Lim's talents and character, appointing him as a Justice of the Peace and electing him as a representative to the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements. In this role, he diligently worked to rectify social ills and implement beneficial policies, earning him praise from the people.

Dr. Lim Boon Keng was an exceptional patriot. He believed that in governance, one must seek the fundamental principles. Commenting on the corruption and mistakes in the late Qing dynasty politics, he pointed out that the root cause was the neglect of education, which had already ruined the foundations. When Tan Kah Kee established Xiamen University, he invited Dr. Lim to serve as the president, knowing that without his leadership, the task would be difficult to accomplish. Dr. Lim served as the president of Xiamen University for sixteen years, cultivating a large number of talented individuals.

Proficient in both Chinese and Western learning, Dr. Lim translated the Chu ci (Verses of Chu) by Qu Yuan into English, which was praised by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. He advocated that China's path to strength and wealth lay in upholding Confucian and Daoist teachings. He was also a scientific genius, being one of the earliest to recognize the potential of rubber, and he urged the people of Malacca to cultivate it, which became a major livelihood in the region.

Dr. Lim Boon Keng was benevolent and philanthropic, with numerous charitable deeds both at home and abroad that are too many to recount. Respected by the political elite, he was honored with poems and accolades. At the age of 72, with a youthful appearance, he was married twice, to Mrs. Huang and Mrs. Yin, and had five children - four sons and one daughter. His descendants have continued to serve the nation, with his grandsons leading the Red Cross Society, serving as army engineers, and holding important positions in the banking industry.

Lim Boon Keng & Lim Kho Seng Medical Bursary (2007)

Dr Lim Boon Keng’s education at Raffles Institution almost ended prematurely when his father passed away and his family faced financial difficulties. The school’s principal intervened and allowed him to continue studying. In 1887, he was awarded the Queen’s Scholarship and read medicine in Edinburgh University, UK. He became known for promoting social and educational reforms. His son, Dr Lim Kho Seng, also studied medicine at the same university.

To honour his father and brother, Dr Lim Peng Thiam made arrangements in his estate for his wife, Madam Jane Yong Su Tshu and their daughter, Ms Annabelle Lim to make an endowed gift to NUS. The Bursary, established in their memory, supports financially disadvantaged students at NUS Medicine.
