His first wife, whom he married in December 1896 at the Presbyterian Church in Orchard road,
was the elder daughter of Mr Wong Nai Siong, of Foo-chow. She was a refined, enlightened and well
educated gentlewoman. The experiences which she had gained through her visit to England
andd America, prior to her marriage, enabled her to take a
sympathetic and active interest in all the reform movements of this period, in which
her husband played a part
